THE SHORT ANSWER
Creator analysis should not start with an industry average. First confirm each metric’s definition, period and sample. Then compare the typical performance and variability of similar posts, check whether the audience can take the campaign’s desired action, and read the context of comments. Metrics provide signals; they become useful only when connected to content and the collaboration job.
Start with the denominator
Engagement rate can use followers, reach or views as the denominator, and those values cannot be ranked directly. Average views may also combine different periods, formats and pinned posts. Record the formula, sample size, period, platform and content type before comparison.
A number without a source or definition is a lead to verify, not a confirmed conclusion. QuickKOL can bring signals into one candidate view, while the team still checks whether the conditions are comparable.
Look at the distribution
One viral post can distort an average. Lay out recent comparable posts, inspect the middle of the range, high and low outcomes, and contexts such as giveaways, trends, paid amplification or collaborations.
An outlier is not automatically a problem and should not be copied automatically. It warrants a question; for campaign planning, consistent access to a relevant audience is often more useful than one unexplained peak.
Connect evidence to the campaign goal
Read whether comments address product use, purchase conditions, alternatives or lived experience. Comment volume does not establish comment quality; generic short comments, repetition and contest behavior should not be weighted like substantive discussion.
Awareness emphasizes relevant reach and consistency. Product education can emphasize sustained viewing, saves, question quality and explanation. Conversion also requires links and a usable site journey. Different goals should not use one fixed ranking.
Connect audience signals to market conditions
Country, language, age and interest data must be read alongside product availability. A thematically relevant audience cannot complete the campaign goal if the product cannot be purchased, the page lacks local language support or the offer is unavailable.
Distinguish the creator’s overall audience from the audience attracted to one content category. Comment language, question types and real use situations can add context that an account-level profile cannot provide.
Return an evidence set, not only a score
The final output should include metric definitions, relevant content, audience judgment, performance consistency, risk and data gaps. A composite score may help order the list, but it cannot replace the recommendation reason.
A QuickKOL analysis should show why a creator advances, what still needs confirmation and which new evidence could change the decision.
Normalize the denominator before judging performance
Engagement rate commonly uses at least two denominators: interactions divided by followers, or interactions divided by views. Suppose a video receives 1,200 likes, 80 comments, 40 saves and 30 shares, for 1,350 interactions. The account has 100,000 followers and the video has 45,000 views. Engagement by followers is 1.35%; engagement by views is 3.00%. Both can be mathematically correct, but they answer different questions and should not be ranked in one unlabeled column.
Then use the platform definition. YouTube defines average view duration as the average minutes watched per view under the selected content, date, country or other filters. Impressions CTR describes how often a registered thumbnail impression leads to a view. YouTube also notes that CTR can decline as content expands beyond a loyal core audience. A falling CTR therefore does not automatically mean that the content deteriorated. Store platform, date range, format, paid status and denominator with every metric.
Use distribution and comments to explain the number
For each creator, sample 12 comparable posts and record median views, the approximate 25th-to-75th percentile range, and the context behind the highest and lowest posts. If the middle six posts sit between 20k and 28k views while one giveaway reaches 140k, budget against the stable range and label the giveaway separately. When fewer than five comparable posts exist, do not declare the account “consistent”; record that evidence is insufficient.
Comment quality should also be counted rather than described from memory. From the first 50 visible comments on each post, label product questions, purchase intent, user experience, unrelated reactions and suspicious repetition. Report the counts with representative examples. Fifty is a review-capacity threshold, not a population estimate. TikTok’s commercial-content quality standard emphasizes authentic use, experience and credible expression; comment context helps show whether people understood the product instead of making a lightweight interaction.
Metric definition table
Always retain the platform field, date range and denominator.
| Metric | Formula | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Follower engagement | Interactions ÷ followers × 100% | Interaction relative to account size |
| View engagement | Interactions ÷ views × 100% | Action among viewers |
| Average percentage viewed | Avg. watch time ÷ video length | Content retention |
| CTR | Clicks ÷ eligible impressions × 100% | Packaging and action path |
