How to use multi-touch attribution for creator campaigns without double counting

Preserve journeys, standardize campaign tags, separate attribution models from incrementality and reconcile channel credit to one conversion total.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Multi-touch attribution answers how existing rules distribute conversion credit across observed touches; it does not prove incremental impact. Standardize links, codes, campaign IDs and content IDs, preserve available journeys, then choose one primary reporting model. Credit assigned across channels must reconcile to one set of valid conversions rather than adding first touch, last touch and code orders as three outcomes.

Create consistent touchpoint identity

Every creator asset needs creator_id, content_id, campaign_id, platform, date and UTM. Map codes to the same creator_id instead of temporary name matching.

Redirects, short links and app stores can lose parts of a journey. Record which touches are observable and which rely on codes or surveys so missing data is not treated as no influence.

Choose one primary model and retain comparisons

First touch emphasizes discovery, last touch emphasizes proximity to conversion, and data-driven models distribute credit across observed paths. Choose based on the review decision and document it before launch.

Compare model sensitivity internally, but use one primary model in reporting. If a creator gets 30% credit at first touch and 8% at last touch, those describe different roles rather than additive results.

Resolve overlap between codes and clicks

One order may begin with a creator link, return through search or email, and use that creator’s code. Deduplicate at order level: one valid order enters the total once, then receives model credit.

Separate code use without a visible click and clicks with another code. These paths reveal cross-device behavior, word of mouth or code leakage and should not automatically receive full creator credit.

Keep attribution separate from incrementality

Attribution describes observed paths; incrementality needs a control, geography, time or another experiment. Report attributed revenue, experimental increment and unobserved influence in separate sections.

Reconcile valid orders, allocated credit, refunds and windows in every review. Save model and version in QuickKOL so quarter-to-quarter comparisons do not silently change rules.

Reconcile conversions before allocating credit

Google Analytics attribution reports show how touchpoints receive conversion credit. Before choosing a model, make sure each valid conversion appears once and align exposure, click, code, brand search and CRM data to one observation window. When user-level paths cannot be connected, label an aggregate scenario instead of inventing an exact sequence.

For 1,000 valid conversions, first-touch creators may receive 280, assisting touches 360, last touches 310 and 50 remain unallocated; total credit must reconcile to 1,000. A last-touch-only report of 310 ignores early explanation and demand formation. Show business outcome, model rule and unallocated share together and test whether the conclusion survives one or two alternative models.

Multi-touch attribution reconciliation

Allocated credit plus unallocated outcomes should reconcile to valid outcomes.
