THE SHORT ANSWER
Without buying a database, discover Instagram accounts through public work and owner-controlled channels, then filter observed follower counts in a local workbook. This free workflow has a manual time cost and does not guarantee complete coverage. Record identity, source, date, precision and refresh status. Leave an unread count blank rather than replace it with zero.
Define what free means
Free can mean public discovery, local organization or a limited trial from a vendor. It does not automatically mean unlimited accounts, complete audience data and continuous updates. State the manual time you are willing to spend and the fields the decision actually requires before selecting the route.
The free-pilot guide helps bound the task. This article provides a manual workbook method; it does not claim an unverified permanently free advanced filter from QuickKOL or another vendor. A transparent workflow can be useful without presenting itself as a complete database replacement. The researcher should know which work remains manual, which observations may be approximate and which gaps cannot be resolved by a local spreadsheet formula.
Discover accounts through topics and work
Combine the product task, geography and format, save relevant public work and confirm Instagram through the author’s own links. Avoid a broad trending tag that produces a large pool with little relevance. The discovery route should explain why the person belongs in the research before size is considered.
The search-route guide helps preserve queries. Collect a small batch and inspect the work-based reason for inclusion. Apply the follower range afterwards to narrow the pool rather than use it as a substitute for fit. Record unsuccessful routes too, because another researcher needs to know whether a small result reflects a limited query or a genuinely scarce set of observable candidates under the current task conditions.
Use a minimum useful schema
Use fields such as handle, profile_url, work_url, topic, observed_followers, precision, observed_at, source_url, status and notes. Add location evidence only when the task requires it. Avoid unrelated private information. A compact schema is easier to maintain and less likely to create the appearance of a complete dossier from sparse public observations.
Each row should represent an observation, with the old value or a version retained when refreshed. Public displays can be abbreviated. Do not treat 20K as an exact official reading of 20,000 unless the source actually provides that precision. The two-source guide helps explain why an apparently small difference may reflect presentation or timing. The workbook needs to retain those qualifications rather than erase them to make every count look equally exact.
Make the range rule explicit
Suppose the project selects 10,000 through 30,000 followers and explicitly includes both boundaries. Exact observations can pass when they are greater than or equal to the lower bound and less than or equal to the upper bound. Missing observations and abbreviated values near a boundary need review rather than an invented exact result.
A lower bound above the upper bound is a rule error. Negative values and unparsed text should not enter a numeric comparison. Distinguish out of range from missing and stale. Otherwise a single failed flag hides whether the candidate genuinely exceeds the range or simply lacks a usable observation. These are hypothetical project boundaries, not a universal definition of micro influencers or a claim that accounts inside the range are automatically more suitable.
Separate vendor search from local filtering
Modash documentation describes follower-size and other filters available within its search product. A feature description does not establish that a permanently free plan includes those capabilities. Current pricing, trial conditions and limits require their own verification before the team relies on them.
The local workbook filters accounts you have already discovered and recorded. It does not automatically find everyone in the range or verify audience age, authenticity or location. Keep that coverage distinction prominent. A researcher can use the workbook to make a small project reproducible, while a larger continuously refreshed search may justify a paid service. Compare the actual workload and decision needs rather than describing either route as universally better or assuming that a spreadsheet reproduces a vendor’s full data collection.
Return to the brief after filtering
After the range filter, review work, identity, availability and the business contact route. If no results fit, revise the content query or explain why the range itself needs reconsideration. Do not quietly change observed counts to complete a roster. Preserve the rule version so another reviewer can reproduce the decision.
QuickKOL can assist brief understanding, work discovery and contact preparation. The team still owns the workbook observations and status maintenance. The accompanying CSV provides blank fields and instructions rather than a fabricated creator database. Refresh relevant records before outreach when the observation is no longer adequate for the decision. The successful output is a small, traceable set of candidates with clear limits, not a claim that the entire Instagram market has been searched for free.
How can the workbook be filtered in practice?
After importing the CSV, set observed_followers as numeric and preserve an explicit date format. First select rows whose status is ready and precision is exact, then apply the inclusive lower and upper bounds. Review needs_observation, stale and approximate rows separately. Do not sort the text 20K as if it were an exact numeric observation.
Keep an untouched copy of the import. Save another version when changing the range so the original observations and earlier decisions remain recoverable. A view or filter can narrow the set without deleting the out-of-range records. This makes it possible to revisit a justified range change without repeat discovery.
The included workbook starts empty because no live account observations have been collected for it. Populate it from supported public evidence and follow the instructions. A blank, well-defined schema is a more useful starting artifact than a sample database whose apparent completeness depends on fabricated creator counts or business contacts.
Can an unread follower count be entered as zero?
No. Zero is a numeric observation, while blank means the data has not been obtained. Confusing them distorts filters, averages and later reports. Use a status such as needs_observation and collect the value when it is necessary.
If the task does not depend on an exact count, it may be reasonable to preserve unknown and judge the work. Do not guess simply to complete every cell. A useful free workflow is honest about what it knows and how much effort a missing field warrants.

A working comparison

| Task | Evidence | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Exact range | Count, date and inclusive boundaries | Apply the stated rule |
| Ambiguous boundary | Abbreviation or insufficient precision | Review instead of guessing |
| Missing | No usable observation | Leave blank and label status |
